Vancouver municipal election to address construction costs and drug use laws

As Vancouver approaches municipal elections on October 17, local organizations and community workers are highlighting critical issues facing the city.

The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) has launched its ‘Build Lower Mainland’ campaign, urging candidates to address rising costs and uncertainty in the construction market. The VRCA is calling for greater transparency regarding development cost charges, improved coordination between government levels, and more predictable permitting standards to prevent project delays or cancellations.

Simultaneously, a plebiscite will be included in the municipal election regarding the city’s approach to the opioid crisis. Voters will decide whether to strengthen laws to ban public drug use and whether to repurpose the old St. Paul’s Hospital for voluntary and involuntary care beds. While city officials cite unprecedented levels of street disorder and safety concerns, outreach workers warn that punitive measures may strip substance users of hope and safety, potentially worsening the public health emergency.
