Vancouver Police issue over 1,275 e-scooter warnings and tickets
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) has issued more than 1,275 warnings and tickets during a month-long enforcement campaign targeting electric kick scooter regulations. The initiative, which ran from September 4 to October 4, aimed to increase rider safety following a summer that saw at least one fatality and one serious injury involving an e-scooter.
Lack of helmet use was the most frequent violation, accounting for 920 interactions, including 753 warnings and 167 tickets. Other notable enforcement actions included 181 instances of riding on sidewalks and 84 cases of riding with a passenger.
Key regulations highlighted by the VPD include the requirement for riders to be at least 16 years old, the necessity of wearing helmets, and the prohibition of riding on roads with speed limits exceeding 50 km/h. Additionally, riders must use cycle lanes or the far right of the road, and e-scooters must be walked across crosswalks and on sidewalks.
