Vancouver Whitecaps' future in doubt as owners seek buyer after World Cup

Following Vancouver’s final World Cup match at a packed BC Place, attention has turned to the future of the MLS club Vancouver Whitecaps. The club’s ownership is looking for a buyer, with a U.S.-based group having formally expressed interest in relocating the franchise to Las Vegas. Supporters’ groups, including the Vancouver Southsiders and The Sisters, have launched a #SaveTheCaps campaign, urging potential buyers to keep the team in Vancouver.

The Whitecaps do not own BC Place and their lease expires at the end of the year, raising concerns over revenue and tenancy. Club officials say a Vancouver solution will require commitment from government, business and supporters. The team, one of three Canadian MLS clubs, leads the Western Conference and is seen as central to the region’s soccer identity, funding opportunities for thousands of youth players. "A team should never be moved anyway, but especially from a city that’s hosting a World Cup," said Southsiders president Ciaran Nicoll.

Supporters fear a move would undermine the momentum generated by the World Cup, which showcased strong local appetite for elite soccer.
