Vandal warrior shield discovered in Polish junkyard

An approximately 1,800-year-old shield component was discovered in a junkyard in Hrubieszów, southeastern Poland. The artifact, identified as a metal umbo—the central part of a shield that protects the hand—was found by a man searching for auto parts.

Archaeologists from the Father Stanisław Staszic Museum analyzed the piece and determined it likely belonged to a Vandal warrior. While the wooden and leather components of the shield have long since decayed, the metal umbo remained. Upon further examination, experts found a plug of dried earth inside the component containing charred human bone fragments.

The shape and characteristics of the umbo suggest it dates back to the 2nd century AD. Experts noted that while Roman legionary shields featured similar metal centers, the specific pointed design of this artifact is consistent with Germanic Vandal origins, a group that inhabited the region during that period.
