Vandalism and illegal road markings reported in Austria
Authorities in Upper Austria are dealing with recent acts of vandalism and illegal modifications to public infrastructure. In Freistadt, safety signs designed to alert drivers to young pedestrians on school routes have been targeted. One sign was stolen, while another was damaged by having the image of a child removed. Mayor Christian Gratzl expressed frustration, noting that such incidents cause additional costs for the community and compromise child safety.
In Oberndorf bei Salzburg, unknown individuals illegally repainted a former zebra crossing that had been officially relocated. The relocation was ordered by the Salzburg-Umgebung district authority to improve safety near a railway crossing and prevent heavy vehicles from stopping on the tracks. Despite the official relocation of the crossing approximately 150 meters away, pedestrians continue to use the old, unauthorized markings.
