Vandellòs II nuclear plant hosts extreme emergency drill
The Vandellòs II nuclear power plant is hosting a large-scale tactical exercise involving approximately 200 military personnel from the Military Emergencies Unit (UME), alongside firefighters from the Generalitat and the plant's own emergency teams.
The simulation is based on a high-impact, low-probability scenario involving a powerful earthquake that triggers a catastrophic tsunami. The drill tests response capabilities for extreme events, including structural collapses, fuel tank fires, power supply failures, and potential radiological emissions.
This exercise is part of a periodic rotation across Spanish nuclear plants, established through a 2013 collaboration agreement following the Fukushima accident. The goal is to verify technical compatibility, operational coordination, and the ability to respond to extreme environmental phenomena linked to climate change.
