Vanderbilt names Blaze Berlowitz Week 1 starting quarterback

Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea has announced that senior Blaze Berlowitz will start at quarterback for the season opener against Austin Peay on September 5. However, Lea clarified that the decision is specific to the first game and that highly-ranked freshman Jared Curtis will also see significant playing time.

Lea noted that the competition between the two players has been close. While Berlowitz is tasked with protecting the football and providing offensive organization in the opener, the coaching staff intends to give Curtis experience to aid his development. The decision to use both quarterbacks is intended to manage the transition following the departure of former starter Diego Pavia. The team plans to determine the permanent starting lineup on a week-to-week basis throughout the season.
