Vanessa Baden Kelly discusses inspiration for ‘Lanterns’ episode

Writer Vanessa Baden Kelly has shared insights regarding the third episode of the HBO Max series ‘Lanterns’, titled ‘OutKast’. Kelly revealed that the film ‘King Richard’ served as an inspiration for the portrayal of John Stewart’s family dynamics, specifically regarding how parents shape their children’s futures through difficult training.

In the episode, the series explores John Stewart’s origin story, depicting how his parents trained him to be fearless through rigorous and sometimes dangerous methods to prepare him for his eventual role as a Green Lantern. Kelly noted that she experienced significant anxiety and ‘heart palpitations’ leading up to the episode’s release, fearing whether the character’s arc would resonate with audiences.

Following the premiere, which reportedly drew 10 million viewers over its first three days, Kelly reported an overwhelmingly positive response. She also credited co-executive producer Damon Lindelof for helping her navigate social media criticism and online backlash regarding the show’s direction.
