Vangel Kodjaman: Remembering a pioneer of Macedonian modern art
September 28 marks the anniversary of the passing of Vangel Kodjaman, a foundational figure in modern Macedonian fine arts. Born in Struga in 1904, Kodjaman was an academic painter and educator who played a vital role in establishing the country's artistic and pedagogical institutions.
Kodjaman studied in Belgrade and Italy, absorbing European trends such as post-impressionism, fauvism, and expressionism. His work is characterized by a deep connection to the Macedonian landscape, particularly the Ohrid and Struga regions, capturing light, color, and atmosphere in scenes of lakes, old architecture, and rural life. Beyond landscapes, his oeuvre includes portraits and figurative compositions.
As a pedagogue, he taught for decades at various institutions in Skopje, helping to train multiple generations of artists. He was a founding member of the Association of Fine Artists of Macedonia and was elected to the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1967.
