Vanguard 500 Index Fund celebrates 50th anniversary

The Vanguard 500 Index Fund marks its 50th anniversary, celebrating a half-century since its launch on August 31, 1976. Originally known as the Vanguard First Index Investment Trust, the fund was the industry’s first index fund designed for individual investors.

Founded by Jack Bogle, the fund revolutionized the financial industry by prioritizing low costs through a unique mutual ownership structure. While initially dismissed by Wall Street as ‘Bogle’s Folly,’ index investing has since become a dominant force in the markets. Today, the fund holds approximately $1.7 trillion in assets across all share classes.

Passive investing has grown significantly, with index funds now holding a majority of US fund assets and facilitating the rise of ETFs. Analysts note that the low-cost model allows investors to participate in economic growth with minimal fees, often outperforming actively managed funds over long periods.
