Vanguard to acquire Altruist in wealth-tech deal
Vanguard Group has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Altruist, a fintech platform providing technology and custody services to independent financial advisers. While official financial terms were not disclosed by the companies, reports from The Wall Street Journal suggest the deal is valued at approximately $4 billion, while other sources indicate an all-cash offer of $4.6 billion.
Altruist, founded in 2018, will continue to operate as a standalone business. The acquisition is intended to expand Vanguard’s wealth-management capabilities and increase its reach among registered investment advisers. Vanguard has held a minority stake in Altruist since 2020.
Industry analysts suggest the move intensifies competition for established custodial services provided by Charles Schwab and Fidelity Investments. Vanguard CEO Salim Ramji noted that the acquisition aims to leverage technology to help advisers scale their practices and serve more clients effectively.
