Van's Herb Cheese Boosts Summer Sales as Tourists Return

During the summer travel season, the geographically‑protected Van herb cheese has become the top local product purchased by visitors on their return journeys. Producer and merchant Resul Şığva reported that abundant rainfall this year improved the quality of mountain herbs such as sirmo, mendi and heliz, leading to higher milk quality and a vigorous cheese harvest. Prices ranged from 550 to 650 Turkish lira per kilogram.

The cheese is now vacuum‑packed for safe nationwide shipping, allowing customers living outside the province to order online. Many tourists and expatriates buy 10‑15 kg for winter consumption, and the product’s reduced salt content has further increased demand. The surge supports the regional economy alongside other local goods like honey and butter.
