Vanšu Bridge reconstruction could cost Latvia 700,000 euros daily

The reconstruction of the Vanšu Bridge in Riga has raised significant economic and logistical concerns. Economics Minister Viktors Valainis stated that a complete closure of the bridge during repairs could cost the Latvian economy approximately 700,000 euros per day.

To mitigate these losses and maintain traffic flow between Pārdaugava and Old Riga, Valainis has proposed the construction of a temporary bridge over the Daugava. He suggested that such a structure could be purchased using state material reserves, noting that it could later be repurposed for other bridge repairs or defense needs. The Minister indicated he would discuss the costs and the necessity of state assistance for the Riga City Council.

Discussions involving officials and experts, including Ansis Pūpols and architect Andis Sīlis, have focused on the necessity of alternative transport solutions, the feasibility of pontoon bridges, and the importance of rigorous construction supervision to prevent the project from becoming a prolonged disruption to the city.
