Vanuatu manages kava supply chain amid Ambae volcanic activity

The Manaro Volcano eruption on Ambae has prompted government intervention to protect the local kava supply chain. Due to heavy ashfall reducing sunlight, the Ministry of Trade and Commerce, through the Department of Industry, has provided polycarbonate roofing materials to Dambulu Enterprise. This equipment is intended to improve drying facilities and maintain purchasing capacity for farmers despite the volcanic activity.

Separately, the Santo Packhouse has launched its first commercial operating phase, targeting VT33 million in purchases from local farmers and suppliers through late 2026. The initial focus is on taro and dry coconut, with plans to eventually expand into cassava, ginger, and other root crops.

Amid these developments, kava farmers in Pentecost have raised concerns regarding the government's target to plant 10 million kava plants by 2030. Farmers report that high demand and a shortage of plants are driving up prices, while noting a lack of visible progress and insufficient feeder roads to transport crops to markets.
