Vaonis launches Atlas modular smart telescope system

French company Vaonis has announced Atlas, a new modular smart telescope system designed to allow users to swap optical modules similarly to interchangeable camera lenses. The system utilizes the SkyDock connection system, which enables users to attach one or two imaging modules to a base mount without tools.

When two identical modules are used simultaneously via the SkyTwin feature, the system doubles light collection to capture fine details more quickly. The system is controlled through the Gaia app, which provides a live view of the sky and allows users to select targets for the mount to track. Additionally, the SkyGuard feature includes an all-sky camera that provides augmented reality overlays and timelapse capabilities.

The first available imaging module is the Atlas 80, featuring an 80-mm opening and an apochromatic lens arrangement to prevent color fringing. While currently limited to the Atlas 80, Vaonis plans to release future modules optimized for different celestial objects, such as planets.
