VAR to be used in Chile's Primera B football starting second semester

The Council of Presidents of the ANFP approved the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in Chile's Primera B, the second‑tier football league. The decision follows a trial of a centralized VAR system in the Primera División and aims to reduce on‑field controversies in the increasingly competitive ascenso division.

Implementation will begin with a white‑paper trial on matchday 16, after which VAR will be officially applied from matchday 17. Referee chief Roberto Tobar said the judges have been intensively trained and are ready to deliver “the good arbitration this division deserves.” The move is expected to bring the same technological standards enjoyed by the top division to the lower tier.

The switch comes amid calls from clubs and fans for VAR in Primera B, with officials noting that the technology is “indispensable in world football” given the intensity of play. The ANFP’s decision aligns with ongoing efforts to modernize Chilean football officiating.
