Varadero tourism highlights economic divide in Cuba
Social media footage and reviews from Varadero have highlighted growing economic disparities in Cuba. Content creator Lucas Corrales shared videos showing a hotel crowded with guests and a parking lot containing over 200 private vehicles, many of which reportedly feature private plates indicating they were imported from the United States. Corrales noted that the abundance of food options and luxury vehicles at the site contrasts sharply with the widespread shortages faced by most Cubans.
Other visitors, including content creator Adriana Lorenzo, have provided mixed reviews of stays at the state-run Hotel Playa Vista Azulin Varadero, managed by the military-controlled Grupo Empresarial Gaviota. While the facilities and staff received praise, guests frequently reported dissatisfaction with buffet variety and food quality.
These reports emerge as the Cuban government intensifies efforts to boost domestic tourism. For the 2026 summer season, the Ministry of Tourism has opened 22 facilities in Varadero to the local market, with room prices starting at $156.50 per night.
