NK Varaždin secured their third consecutive victory in the SuperSport HNL, defeating HNK Rijeka 2-0 in the third round of the league. Ivan Mamut was the standout performer, scoring both goals in the first half during the 20th and 31st minutes.

The first goal came from a header following a cross by Yuri Tavares. The second goal was a penalty converted by Mamut after Gabriel Rukavina was judged to have handled the ball in the penalty area.

Varaždin's coach, Nikola Šafarić, praised his team's character and depth, noting their ability to remain composed despite injuries to defenders. Rijeka, led by coach Matjaž Kek, struggled with clinical finishing and defensive errors in the first half. Despite increasing pressure in the second half and a shot hitting the post by Jakov Puljić, Rijeka could not find an equalizer.

Rijeka captain Ante Majstorović acknowledged the deserved defeat and expressed gratitude to the Armada supporters for their continued backing despite the loss. Varaždin now moves to second place in the standings with nine points, joining Osijek at the top.
