Varaždin to introduce nighttime alcohol sales ban
Varaždin is set to become the first continental city in Croatia to implement strict nighttime alcohol restrictions. Following the precedent set by coastal tourist towns like Split and Makarska, the city plans to prohibit the sale of alcohol in shops and at gas stations between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM.
Mayor Neven Bosilj stated the decision is a direct response to resident requests to curb disturbances to public order and peace, particularly near gas stations. The new regulations will also ban the consumption of alcohol in all public spaces after 10:00 PM, with potential fines for violators reaching up to 260 euros.
To mitigate the impact on the local economy, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs will be exempt from these restrictions, allowing them to continue serving alcohol legally. Local residents and some hospitality business owners have expressed support for the measure, citing the need for quieter nights and improved public cleanliness.
