Brijesh Ganjhu, Naxalite commander, killed in Varanasi encounter
Brijesh Ganjhu, a high-ranking commander of the banned Jharkhand-based Naxalite organization Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC), was killed during an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Varanasi on Sunday morning.
Acting on a tip-off, the ATS attempted to intercept Ganjhu, who was traveling on a motorcycle near the Lanka Maidan area in Ramnagar. According to police, Ganjhu opened fire on the security team, leading to a retaliatory exchange of fire. Ganjhu sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at a hospital.
Authorities reported that Ganjhu carried a combined bounty of 30 lakh rupees, with 25 lakh offered by the Jharkhand government and 5 lakh by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He was wanted in approximately 50 criminal cases, including murder, extortion, and terror-funding investigations.
During the exchange, bullets struck the bulletproof jackets of UP ATS Deputy Superintendent Vipin Rai and Head Constable Nitendra Krishna; both officers were reported safe. Police recovered arms and ammunition, including two pistols and a carbine, from the scene.
