Vardar 1961 wins Macedonian Super Cup handball title
Vardar 1961 has secured its fifth Macedonian Super Cup title after a dramatic 32-31 victory over GRK Ohrid in Gevgelija. The match, which served as the official opening of the new Macedonian club handball season, was decided in the final seconds. With only 19 seconds remaining and the score tied at 31-31, Vorkapić scored a decisive penalty to give Vardar the lead. Vardar's goalkeeper, Valač, secured the win by defending a final shot from Ohrid's Strmljan, preventing the game from going into extra time.
Vorkapić was the standout performer for Vardar, contributing up to 12 goals. This victory marks a significant comeback for the club, avenging a series of three consecutive losses to Ohrid.
In broader handball news, the European Handball Federation (EHF) released its pre-season Power Rankings for the Champions League. While Vardar was not included in the top 12, the club is returning to the European elite and is placed in a group featuring Melsungen, Wisła Płock, and Nantes. The new Macedonian Super League season also begins with Vardar facing Eurofarm Pelister.
