Varese Chamber of Commerce launches €100,000 Sport&Stay program to extend athletes' stays

The Chamber of Commerce of Varese has introduced a pilot scheme called “Sport&Stay” that allocates up to €100,000 in subsidies for athletes competing in local events. The funding is intended to encourage participants to arrive earlier or remain after competition, turning sport trips into longer tourism stays that can generate between €120 and €140 per day per visitor, well above the regional average. The measure, announced by Chamber president Mauro Vitiello, will be available for events scheduled through June 2027 and can be claimed for each competition an athlete enters. By promoting a more sustainable, year‑round tourism model, the initiative aims to boost the local economy of the Varese province, known for its lakes and valleys.

A related commentary on travel habits warns against overly rigid itineraries, suggesting that spontaneous, unplanned moments often create the most memorable experiences for visitors.
