Varese City Council clashes over mosque urban planning
The Varese City Council experienced intense political clashes during its fourth consecutive session regarding the new Territory Government Plan (PGT). The debate centered on amendments proposed by the Lega party concerning the mosque located on Viale Giusti.
Lega representative Stefano Angei argued for the complete removal of the religious center from the urban planning document, citing a lack of essential infrastructure, specifically parking spaces. In response, Councilor Andrea Civati defended the administration's position, noting that the place of worship has been established for at least 25 years and that the PGT's purpose is simply to census and regulate existing religious buildings.
The session was further complicated by loud techno music from a nearby DJ set at the Giardini Estensi, which made communication difficult for the council members. Other representatives raised concerns regarding safety and the need for technical reports on the structure, while members of the PD sought to maintain the discussion on the regularization of existing sites.
