Varese closes streets for cedar tree removal and asbestos site cleanup

On Saturday 5 July, Varese municipal crews began cutting down two Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara) trees located between via Cesare Parravicini and viale Aguggiari. The work required a temporary closure of the terminal section of via Parravicini near the traffic light and a reversal of traffic flow on via Vetera to allow access for the lifting platform. The remaining three cedars are scheduled for removal in the coming days, following public debate over the trees' status as potential monuments.

A separate operation started on Tuesday 7 July to remove asbestos‑containing material (eternit) from an abandoned structure along the Canale Villoresi bike path. The 1,500‑square‑metre area, previously used as a community garden, will be demolished, cleared and secured by specialized personnel. The bike and pedestrian lane between via Marsala and via Pacinotti will be closed to the public until the work is completed, expected on Wednesday 22 July, with temporary fencing erected around the nearby dog area.

Both projects involve traffic modifications, site safety measures and preparation for future public‑use redevelopment.
