Varese Prison Visit Highlights Summer Overcrowding Crisis

On August 3, 2026, a delegation from the Camera Penale of Varese visited the Casa Circondariale di Varese as part of the national “Ristretti in Agosto” campaign organised by the Unione delle Camere Penali Italiane to keep public attention on prison conditions during the summer period.

Led by President Elisabetta Bertani, the group met with the prison director, administrative staff and the Polizia Penitenziaria to assess persistent problems such as severe overcrowding, staff shortages, limited health and psychological services, reduced work and treatment programmes, and the high number of deaths and suicides. The visit aims to raise awareness and support corrective actions.
