Italy tourism sector shows strong growth for 2026 season

Italy's tourism sector shows strong performance for the 2026 season, with total spending for July and August reaching 20.4 billion euros. Research from Demoskopika indicates a 7.5% increase in overall spending, supported by approximately 43.3 million arrivals and nearly 190 million overnight stays. While tourism prices have risen, sector-specific inflation has remained relatively stable at 2.6%, below the general consumer price index.

Regional trends highlight diverse growth. The Amalfi Coast is seeing a shift toward September and October travel, driven by international markets from Northern Europe and the United States. In Sorso, overnight stays for the first half of 2026 increased by 42.3% compared to 2025. Lake districts, particularly in Northern Italy, are also seeing a boom, with international tourists accounting for over 82% of visitors in some areas.

However, the industry faces ongoing challenges. Labor unions, including Fisascat CISL, emphasize the need to improve job quality by addressing seasonality and involuntary part-time work to ensure stable employment. Additionally, environmental concerns persist, with Legambiente reporting that over one-third of sampled Italian marine and lake sites exceeded microbiological pollution limits.
