Varginha municipality launches pilot of washable polypropylene waste bins

The city of Varginha in Brazil has begun a pilot program installing new washable polypropylene waste bins along the downtown pedestrian boulevard on Rua Doutor Wenceslau Braz. The bins, made of a durable plastic that can be cleaned and disinfected regularly, are intended to improve waste collection, keep the sidewalks tidy and encourage residents to use the containers for small solid waste. Mayor Leonardo Ciacci emphasized that public participation is essential for meeting the project’s sustainability targets and asked citizens to place litter only inside the bins to avoid street litter.

The initiative, coordinated by the municipal Environment Secretariat, aims to test the practicality of reusable containers for public spaces and could inform future waste‑management policies for the municipality.
