Vargit flowers bloom in Gümüşhane signaling winter migration
The blooming of vargit flowers, also known as autumn crocuses, has begun at Sarıtaş Yaylası in Gümüşhane, signaling the arrival of winter. Located at an altitude of 2,250 meters near Çorak village, these yellow and purple flowers serve as a traditional natural indicator for local residents to prepare for migration from the highlands to villages.
Nature guide İmdat Yılmaz noted that the appearance of these flowers acts as a seasonal calendar for the region. He explained that the blooming signifies it is time to leave the highlands, as snow is expected to follow shortly. The Sarıtaş Yaylası has a history spanning between 200 and 400 years, with human habitation typically limited to four or five months per year due to the climate.
