Varha expands end-of-life volunteer program to Salo and Uusikaupunki
The Varha wellbeing services provider is expanding its end-of-life volunteer program to Uusikaupunki and Salo this autumn. The initiative aims to provide additional support to individuals in the final stages of life and their relatives.
Volunteers do not perform medical procedures or replace healthcare professionals. Instead, their primary role is to provide presence through listening, conversation, or simply being with the patient so that family members can take breaks. According to Satu Laine, head nurse at Varha’s palliative center, the work focuses on authentic human connection, often involving discussions about life experiences and memories rather than just death.
To ensure quality and emotional stability, applicants undergo an interview process and must complete free training that combines theory, discussion, and practical exercises. The training covers topics such as listening skills, supporting grieving family members, and the specific responsibilities of a volunteer. New volunteers are also guided by experienced support persons during their initial practical sessions.
