Varha faces low demand for Pihlajakylä elderly housing

In the Southwest Finland welfare area (Varha), the Pihlajakylä community living unit is facing potential closure due to a lack of demand. While average waiting times for community living and 24-hour service housing are approximately 69 days, and caregiver support waits about 50 days, Pihlajakylä currently has nine vacant apartments with no applicants.

Officials from Varha state that the lack of interest is due to the facility's layout; the row-house style prevents easy access to common areas, which diminishes the sense of community that residents seek. Consequently, demand is shifting toward other units, such as those in Salo, which remain full.

Separately, clarifications have been issued regarding how waiting times for elderly housing services are calculated across Finnish welfare areas. To ensure comparability, waiting time is defined as the period from when an application is made or a need is first identified by a social worker until a vacancy is notified and becomes available to the client. This standardized practice was aligned by the network of elderly service management in February 2026.
