Moderna and Merck report breakthrough in personalized mRNA cancer vaccine trial
Moderna and Merck have reported positive Phase 3 trial results for a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, designed to treat high-risk melanoma. The therapy is administered in combination with Merck’s immunotherapy drug, Keytruda.
The trial, which included over 1,000 patients, met its primary endpoint by significantly improving recurrence-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival compared to Keytruda alone. The personalized approach involves analyzing a patient’s tumor DNA to identify unique mutations and coding synthetic mRNA to train the immune system to target those specific cancer cells.
Following the announcement, Moderna’s stock experienced a massive surge, with some reports noting a single-day gain of up to 177 percent. The breakthrough has also impacted the biotechnology sector, driving interest in genetic sequencing companies like Illumina and Pacific Biosciences, which are essential for the personalized manufacturing process of such therapies.
