Mercedes-Benz lowers profit outlook amid China market pressure

Mercedes-Benz Group has lowered its full-year 2026 profit guidance for its passenger car division, reducing the expected adjusted return on sales from a previous range of 3% to 5% down to 2% to 3%. The company cited a significant decline in sales within the Chinese market and rising costs, including higher material expenses, as primary drivers for the adjustment.

In the third quarter, the automotive division's adjusted return on sales fell to 2.5%, down from 4.8% in the same period last year. While Mercedes-Benz reported a 60.5% increase in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales, reaching 68,428 units, the overall market environment in China remains challenging due to intense competition from local manufacturers.

To mitigate these financial pressures, the company is considering a more modularized architecture for its 2030s model generation. This strategy, similar to approaches used by mass-market manufacturers, aims to simplify development and manufacturing by using shared technical modules across various models to achieve significant cost savings.
