Varna cemetery construction sparks controversy

The construction of two nine-story office buildings in close proximity to a cemetery park in Varna has sparked significant backlash from grieving families. The buildings are situated just three meters from the regulatory boundary of the cemetery property.

Local authorities, including the Varna Municipality and the Regional Department of Construction and Architecture (RDNSK) Varna, have stated that the construction is legal. They maintain that the distance complies with the city's approved urban plan and that all building documentation is in order. One of the buildings is currently under construction and includes plans for an underground parking garage.

Family members of the deceased have expressed concerns regarding both moral conduct and physical safety. Reports indicate that construction debris has occasionally landed on graves, leading some families to cover them for protection. There are also concerns regarding whether the excavation for underground parking might disturb the earth and the remains of those buried in the area. The company managing the cemetery park, Obredi Varna, has requested that the construction firms install a higher fence to mitigate the impact on visitors.
