Varna hosts replica icon containing fragment of the Holy Cross

A replica of a highly venerated icon containing a fragment of the Holy Cross will be on display for worship at the St. Archangel Michael Church in Varna from September 12 to 16. The exhibition coincides with the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy and Life-Giving Cross.

The original icon is one of the most precious relics held by the Xirokhampos Monastery on Mount Athos. It contains what is described as the largest preserved piece of the True Cross, specifically the part where the feet of Christ were nailed. The relic is embedded within the cover of an inlaid altar Gospel and was reportedly donated to the monastery by Emperor Roman via a chrysobull in February 1034.

The replica being exhibited in Varna was crafted and consecrated at the Xirokhampos Monastery. Believers are invited to visit the church to offer prayers and venerate the icon through September 16.
