Varna water pipeline failure: Minister Shishkov inspects repairs
Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Ivan Shishkov, inspected the repair operations following a major failure of the Varna–Golden Sands main water pipeline. The inspection included officials from Bulgarian Water Holding EAD and VIK-Varna OOD.
An automatic shut-off system activated immediately upon the failure, limiting water loss. Emergency teams are replacing the damaged fiberglass pipe with a new steel pipeline. Once connections are made, water will be restored in stages, followed by excavation backfilling and asphalt restoration. Currently, no subscribers in Varna are without water, as a secondary supply route was activated to serve local and resort areas up to the Golden Sands complex.
The failure is attributed to original design errors in the facility, which was co-financed by the EU's IPA program between 2005 and 2007. Factors contributing to the damage include unconsidered terrain slopes, soil movement, and infrastructure strain caused by heavy machinery used in nearby construction projects.
