Varroa mite second wave threatens Australian food security

A second incursion of the Varroa mite, a bee-killing parasite, has been confirmed in Australia as of April 2026. This new wave of pests is reportedly resistant to synthetic chemical treatments, raising significant alarms regarding national food security.

Bees are vital to Australian agriculture, with approximately $12.9 billion worth of crops partially or fully reliant on them for pollination. Key industries affected include almonds, avocados, apples, cherries, and berries. Industry modelling suggests that without effective intervention, the Varroa mite could cause losses of up to $1.25 billion across pollinator-reliant industries over the next 30 years.

Beekeepers are facing increased financial burdens due to the need to shift toward organic treatments to combat chemical resistance. Matt Skinner, president of the NSW Apiarists' Association, has called for increased financial support and subsidized organic treatments to assist businesses struggling with the infestation.
