Varsity Tutors exits school market to refocus on consumer business

Varsity Tutors, a major virtual tutoring provider, has announced the immediate discontinuation of its ‘Varsity for Schools’ services. The company stated in a shareholder letter that the move is intended to refocus resources on its original consumer-based model, targeting parents and college students directly.

This shift reflects a broader contraction in the post-pandemic tutoring market. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many school districts utilized federal recovery funding to expand academic intervention programs through private providers. However, as this federal funding has diminished and state or district-level funding has not fully replaced it, the market for school-based tutoring services is beginning to stabilize or shrink.
