Varta enters insolvency, affecting 2,300 jobs
German battery manufacturer Varta has officially entered insolvency proceedings. On October 1, the Stuttgart court opened insolvency for four group companies: VARTA AG, VARTA Microbattery GmbH, VARTA Storage GmbH, and VARTA Micro Production GmbH.
The insolvency affects approximately 2,300 employees. While the insolvency administrator, Tobias Wahl, is seeking investors to ensure business continuity and notes ongoing interest in the group's technological capabilities, the situation is critical for certain operations. Production at the VARTA Microbattery plant in Nördlingen will cease following the loss of a major client, reportedly Apple, which is expected to source next-generation rechargeable button cells for AirPods from China. This closure will result in the loss of roughly 350 jobs.
