Varta enters self‑administration, sparking concerns for Germany's battery sector
German battery maker Varta AG has been placed into provisional self‑administration following its insolvency filing. An administrator, Tobias Wahl of Anchor, was appointed by the Stuttgart court and expressed cautious optimism, saying the goal is a long‑term, viable solution while keeping operations running and protecting employee wages.
Varta’s management, led by CEO Michael Ostermann, will remain in place and work with the administrator on a restructuring plan. The household‑battery division has been separated from the insolvent parts of the business, limiting immediate disruption. Industry expert Dirk Uwe Sauer warned that a breakup of Varta could trigger domino effects for Germany’s broader battery innovation and supply chain, underscoring the company’s importance to automotive and energy‑sector customers.
