Asian Games 2026: India women's cricket reaches semifinals

The 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, have commenced with significant developments across various sporting disciplines. In women's cricket, the Indian team secured a place in the semifinals following a dominant eight-wicket victory over host nation Japan. Japan was restricted to 57 runs in 19.5 overs, largely due to a four-wicket haul by Shree Charani. India chased the target in just five overs, highlighted by Shafali Verma's unbeaten 40 runs from 15 balls.

Regarding the opening ceremony, kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat has been appointed as India's flag-bearer, replacing shot-putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor. Toor was unable to fulfill the role due to technical issues involving the delivery of his official kit. Sehrawat will lead the Indian contingent alongside shooter Manu Bhaker.

The Games have also faced logistical challenges, with reports of an accommodation crisis for athletes. Organizers are utilizing hotels, a cruise ship, and temporary containers instead of a traditional athletes' village to manage costs. Meanwhile, India is set to make its debut in surfing at the event, fielding four athletes in the shortboard competitions.
