Varzi and Capoliveri roll out smart waste bins and summer police checks

The municipality of Varzi in Lombardy is introducing an electronic waste‑bin system that opens with a personal card. Seven public meetings were held in late June to explain the new containers for wet waste, paper, plastic and mixed waste, while glass collection remains unchanged. The project, financed with about €1 million of EU‑PNRR funds, aims to boost recycling, cut mixed waste and avoid penalties, according to Mayor Giovanni Palli: "We ask all citizens to place each waste in its proper place for a cleaner village."

In the Tuscan town of Capoliveri, the local police command has launched an extraordinary summer monitoring plan. Officers will intensify patrols in the historic centre, the Lacona district and beach areas, checking compliance with waste‑disposal rules, public‑space licences, and road‑traffic regulations. Repeat violations may lead to suspension or revocation of permits, the police chief said, emphasizing the goal of maintaining safety, public decorum and a pleasant environment for residents and tourists during the high‑season influx.
