Vasco da Gama ‘Camisas Negras’ docudrama set for November release

A docudrama chronicling the history of Vasco da Gama’s ‘Camisas Negras’ is set for a national theatrical release in Brazil on November 19. The release date is scheduled for the eve of Black Consciousness Day.

Directed by Jefferson Mello, the film explores the journey of the working-class team, composed largely of Black players, drivers, and painters, as they faced prejudice from the sporting elite. The narrative focuses on their 1923 Campeonato Carioca victory and the subsequent ‘Historical Response’ of 1924.

A pre-premiere is scheduled for November 7 at 8:00 PM at Cine Odeon in Rio de Janeiro. The production features a cast including Juan Paiva, Sérgio Malheiros, and Bruno Mazzeo, with historical research provided by journalist Paulo César Vasconcellos.
