Vasco da Gama has confirmed that its upcoming Campeonato Brasileiro derby against Flamengo will be held at the Nilton Santos stadium, the home of Botafogo, on Thursday. The decision follows the club's inability to secure authorization from the Military Police and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to host the match at its own stadium, São Januário.

The move is facilitated by a standing rental agreement signed between Vasco and Botafogo, which remains active until 2028. Originally established to provide an alternative venue during planned renovations at São Januário, the contract allows Vasco to request stadium use via a simplified “trigger” mechanism. This process is significantly less bureaucratic than negotiating with the consortium that manages the Maracanã stadium.

Alan Belaciano, President of the General Assembly at Vasco, noted that the club chose Nilton Santos partly due to concerns regarding the pitch conditions at Maracanã, especially with Fluminense scheduled to play there the day before. Under the agreement, Vasco manages operations such as security and logistics, while Botafogo retains revenue from parking, bars, and certain advertising rights.
