Vasco Vilaça crowned triathlon world champion

Portuguese triathlete Vasco Vilaça has been crowned world champion following the Finalíssima in Pontevedra, Spain. Vilaça secured the title by finishing second in the race, earning a silver medal behind Australia's Matt Hauser.

Vilaça noted that while he only required a fifth-place finish to guarantee the world title, his goal was to reach the podium. He described the achievement as a moment of relief and a confirmation of his place among the elite of Portuguese athletes, marking the first time a Portuguese person has held this world title since Vanessa Fernandes in 2007. Looking ahead, Vilaça has set his sights on competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
