Vasile Bănescu proposes ban on election campaigns in churches

Vasile Bănescu, a member of the National Audiovisual Council and former spokesperson for the Romanian Patriarchate, has proposed a ban on political election campaigns within churches and monasteries.

Speaking on Național TV, Bănescu criticized the practice of politicians using sacred spaces for media spectacles, specifically referencing the actions of former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu. He argued that such visits are often organized to project a false image of faith rather than for prayer. To prevent the politicization of religious sites, Bănescu suggested that bishops should issue directives prohibiting any politician from conducting campaign activities on church grounds.
