Romania public debt reaches 1,194 billion lei

Romania's public debt rose significantly in May 2026, reaching a total of 1,194 billion lei. This represents an increase of approximately 23 billion lei compared to the 1,171 billion lei recorded in April 2026.

According to data from the Ministry of Finance, the government debt-to-GDP ratio climbed to 61.4%, up from 60.2% in the previous month. This increase was driven by growth in both external and internal debt.

External public debt reached 599.946 billion lei, accounting for 30.8% of the GDP. The majority of this external debt, approximately 471 billion lei or 78.5%, consists of state titles. Internal public debt also saw a notable rise, increasing from 578.715 billion lei in April to 594.1 billion lei in May, representing 30.5% of the GDP.
