Vasily Nebenzya calls for unified counter-terrorism efforts at UN
Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, stated during a UN Security Council session that the fight against terrorism must not become a hostage to geopolitical conflicts. Speaking on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Nebenzya emphasized that while international relations are currently facing a difficult period of divergence, the terrorist threat remains a multilayered and adaptive challenge.
Nebenzya highlighted that terrorist groups are increasingly utilizing modern technologies, including drones, artificial intelligence, and digital financial instruments, to recruit supporters, spread propaganda, and coordinate attacks from great distances. He also noted the ongoing risk of foreign militants transferring combat experience between different regions.
Asserting that no single nation can effectively combat terrorism alone, the Russian diplomat called for a coordinated international response based on international law. He advocated for depoliticized cooperation, emphasizing the need for continuous information exchange, legal assistance, and joint strategies to counter evolving terrorist tactics.
