Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vassilis Kikilias, has expressed deep concern regarding the European Union's stance ahead of critical International Maritime Organization (IMO) negotiations. The discussions, held in London from September 1 to 4, focus on mid-term measures to reduce international shipping emissions and achieve decarbonization.

Kikilias noted that preparatory EU discussions lacked the necessary flexibility to reach a consensus. He specifically highlighted that these discussions failed to adequately account for the positions of member states that represent more than 70% of European shipping. He warned that rigid approaches could undermine the possibility of reaching a final agreement at the IMO.

The Minister emphasized that the energy transition must align environmental ambitions with the actual development of new fuels, propulsion systems, and available technologies. He stressed that measures must be realistic and technologically feasible to ensure they do not increase costs for global families and businesses. Given that the shipping industry handles over 80% of global trade, Kikilias described the upcoming discussions as being of ‘existential importance’ for the sector.
