Vassilis Kokkalis criticizes Greek agricultural policy

Former Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, Vassilis Kokkalis, has criticized the Greek government's agricultural policies, stating that farmers cannot survive on ‘communication dividends.’ Speaking in response to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's recent announcements at the IMF, Kokkalis argued that the government's portrayal of the sector deviates from the reality faced by producers and livestock breeders.

Kokkalis highlighted several critical issues, specifically focusing on the Thessaly region which continues to suffer following the destruction caused by storms Daniel and Elias. He noted that farmers are still awaiting substantive restoration and a real plan for productive reconstruction. Other major concerns raised include delays in agricultural subsidies and compensations, issues surrounding OPEKEPE, the impact of livestock diseases on animal capital, and rising production costs.

The former minister emphasized that the primary sector requires timely payments, transparency, and a concrete plan for reconstruction rather than political rhetoric or tax relief measures.
