Vasto Municipality fined for privacy violations in traffic camera system

The Municipality of Vasto has been sanctioned 5,000 euros by the Italian Data Protection Authority for privacy violations related to its traffic light camera system used to detect infractions.

The Authority found that the municipality failed to comply with European data protection regulations. Specific violations included providing non-compliant or difficult-to-find information to motorists, offering incomplete details regarding citizens' rights, and failing to blur the license plates of other vehicles captured in the footage. Additionally, the required impact assessment was prepared late—after data processing had already begun—and lacked a certain date, a signature, and the necessary opinion from the data protection officer.

Following the ruling, members of the Fratelli d'Italia party, including Francesco Prospero, Guido Giangiacomo, and Vincenzo Suriani, have filed an inquiry. They are demanding that Mayor Francesco Menna and the municipal administration report to the City Council on what specific measures have been taken to comply with the Authority's prescriptions, noting that over two months have passed since the initial decision.
